Scope and Content Note
Organized into five series: I. General Subject File, 1937-1963; II.
Research, 1958-1962; III. National Science Foundation, 1958-1961; IV.
Graduate School, 1945-1961; and V. Building Renovation and
Construction Planning Records, 1968-1981. Each series is arranged
chronologically.
General Subject File contains a copy of the 1937 Chemistry Building
Contract; correspondence; gifts records; E.C. Gilbert - Personal;
School of Science, F.A. Gilfillan; President's Office; programs and
events records. Building Renovation and Construction Planning Records
include meeting minutes of various building committees; proposals;
studies; program descriptions; reports; and dedication information for
the renovation of Gilbert Hall and the construction of Gilbert
Addition.
Historical Note
Chemistry was among the first courses taught in the early college
located in Benton Hall. Beginning in 1892, the classes were taught in
the Chemistry Laboratory, a small frame building beside Benton Hall
with G.B. Shaw as department head. In 1902 it moved to Agriculture
Hall (Education Building). The Chemistry Building was dedicated in
1939, and later renamed for E.C. Gilbert who became department head in
1940. Special programs include Summer Institute for College Chemistry
Teachers, educational television, Richland General Electric Graduate
Work, and Kasetart University in Thailand. Gilbert Hall was renovated
and the addition was dedicated in 1981.
