Alumni Relations Records (RG 35)1897-1996 (inclusive) Scope and Content NoteOrganized into three subgroups: I. Class files; II. Administrative files; III. Publications. See Subgroup and Series Outline for individual series. Most series are arranged chronologically. Most of the material on film has been retained in original form. Subgroup 1, Class Files, includes class records (meeting minutes, constitutions and bylaws, class wills and prophecies, financial records, scrapbooks), class reunion information (announcements, class member lists, programs, correspondence), and a register of alumni. Records for the Class of 1922 also include eight lapel pins donated by Claude F. Palmer. Of significance in Subgroup 2, Administrative Files, are the homecoming reports and scrapbooks (1948-68), special projects files pertaining to a proposed memorial chapel and the carillon in the Memorial Union, OSU Centennial Celebration files, and the OSU Federation meetings minutes. Recordings include a two-record, 78-RPM album of songs recorded by the Oregon State College A Capella Choir, ca. 1950; a three-record, 78-RPM album of songs recorded by the OSC Glee Club and Band, ca. 1953; the 1949 OSC-University of Oregon football game; and an interview with Dean of Men Emeritus Dan Poling about Oregon State College and Corvallis during WWII. Subgroup 3, Publications, contains subject files on important faculty, staff and alumni, manuscripts of articles by writer Tom Bennett, and letters to the editor of the Oregon Stater, OSU's alumni magazine. Among the latter are letters and photocopies of diaries and family histories sent by alumni who are descendants of Oregon Trail pioneers. Information from the letters was used in a December 1992 Oregon Stater article commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Oregon Trail.
Historical NoteAn alumni organization was established at OSU (then Corvallis College) in 1875; John Bryson (Class of 1874) was the first president. In 1914 a formal constitution was adopted that provided for a five-member board. E.B. Lemon became the first regular alumni secretary in 1915 and started the alumni magazine, the OAC Alumnus. In 1929, the alumni office was moved from the Commerce Building to the newly completed Memorial Union, where they remain today. In 1926, the alumni magazine became the Oregon State Monthly; it became the Oregon Stater in 1940 and has retained that title since. Other secretaries/directors of the alumni office have included Godfrey Hoerner, 1919-21; Zelta Feike Rodenwold, 1921-26; E. C. Allworth, 1926- 36; George T. Scott, 1936-38; Warren Reid, 1938-43; Eunice Courtright, 1943-46; John Fenner, 1946-48; Robert Knoll, 1948-61; Crawford H. "Scram" Graham, 1961-78; and Donald S. Wirth, 1978-present.
