Reference Room Rules

    1. All users must complete and sign the Researcher Registration Form.

    2. Researchers must sign the Reference Room Visitor Log when entering and leaving the Reference Room.

    3. ONLY PENCILS may be used in the Reference Room (no pens).

    4. NO ADHESIVE POST-IT NOTES can be used to mark original documents.

    5. NO FOOD OR BEVERAGES  are allowed in the Reference Room.  No smoking or other tobacco use is permitted in the Archives.

    6. Coats, briefcases, bookbags, and other personal property not essential to research projects must be placed on or near the coat rack.

    7. The use of portable personal computers and audio and video recording equipment will be allowed when possible.  However, the use of hand-held scanners is prohibited.

    8. Materials are to be used only in the Reference Room.

    9. All stack areas of the Archives are closed to patrons.  Except for those materials on the bookcases in the Reference Room, all materials will be retrieved by the Archives staff.  No materials will be retrieved after 4:45 pm.

    10. Materials should be handled with care and kept flat on the table, when possible.  They must not be leaned on, written on, folded, or otherwise handled in anyway likely to damage them.

    11. Please only use one folder of materials at a time. An OUT CARD may be used to mark its place in the box. Items are not to be removed from their folder except with the guidance of the Archives staff.  Keep the records in their present arrangement; loose pages will stay in order if turned like pages in a book.

    12. When handling photographs, researchers must wear white cotton gloves provided by the Archives.

    13. Photocopying is permitted, if it is in accordance with donor agreements and copyright restrictions, unless the item is fragile, exceptionally valuable, or too large. All photocopying is done by the Archives staff.  Copy slips can be used to indicate specific pages to be copied.

    14. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. code) governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, copies may be provided for individual researchers' private study. The copies are provided for the individual's personal use and may not be further reproduced, published, broadcast, displayed, offered for sale, transferred to another individual or deposited in another institution without written permission from Oregon State University Archives and the copyright holder.

    15. Reasonable accomodations will be made to ensure that all persons will have access to the Archives holdings.  Please let the Archives staff know how we can assist you.

    16. The OSU Archives wishes to provide access to its holdings that is consistent with good scholarship, productive research, and archival preservation. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
