Scope and Content Note

Commencement programs are published by the Registrar for distribution at the University's graduation ceremony and include a program for the event as well as a list of graduates, honors and awards, and major gifts to the university during the previous academic year. This publication group includes selected individual programs for 1870 through 1909 as well as a bound volume with some original programs and photocopies from this period and, for the remaining years, a list of degrees conferred compiled from published catalogs, alumni directories, and confirmed against the students' academic records.

Form of Materials

Beginning in the 1960s and continuing to the present, the Registrar publishes an "official" program that is distributed several weeks after the commencement event and includes corrections, additions, and deletions. These "official" programs are imprinted with "Official Copy".

Beginning with the 1967 program, the Archives' holdings include both the official and unofficial (as distributed as commencement) versions for some years and either the official or unofficial version (but not both) for other years. These are indicated on the inventory.

Related Materials

Reference copies of the Commencement Programs are also available in the Reference Room bound with the catalogs for 1960 through 1974. Reference copies of some programs from 1975 to the present are available in the Memorabilia Collection. The Memorabilia Collection also includes invitations, schedules, baccalaureate service programs, speeches, and other materials pertaining to commencement activities. The Registrar's Office Records (RG 53) include administrative records pertaining to commencement.
