Scope and Content Note

The Daily Barometer is OSU's student newspaper, published by the Student Media Committee on behalf of the Associated Students of OSU. It is written and edited by OSU students and includes news articles, editorials, and advertisements. Arranged chronologically by date of issue, this publication group includes all issues of the campus newspaper from its first issue in 1896 to present. Previous titles include the College Barometer, OAC Barometer, Barometer, and Summer Barometer. A subject index and a personal name index for 1896-1980 are available in the Archives and online:

Form of Materials

All issues are available on 35 mm microfilm. Paper copies of early issues are retained as well as selected noteworthy recent issues; photocopies of some issues (or portions thereof) that are not readable on the microfilm are also retained. Bound volumes of most issues from 1906/07 through 1966/67 are also available.

Historical Note

The first issue was published on 16 March 1896 as the College Barometer and subsequent issues were published monthly. The paper was discontinued in 1898 due to the Spanish-American War, but was revived in 1900. In 1907, it became a weekly and in 1921 a semi-weekly paper. It became the Daily Barometer in 1923 and is still published daily when classes are in session. The Summer Barometer is published weekly during the summer term.

The front page of the 8 June 1910 issue printed as a pillow top as well as other information about the student newspaper is available in the Memorabilia Collection (MC-Barometer); the Publication Committee (RG 94), Memorial Union and Student Activities (RG 99), and Vice Provost for Student Affairs (RG 102) Records include materials pertaining to the Barometer. Photographs published in the Barometer are available in the Barometer Photograph Collection (P 35), Harriet's Collection, and other photographic collections. The Barometer is also available in the Valley Library (call number LH1 O7).

The Story of the Oregon State College Barometer Manuscript is a compilation of information about the student newspaper and its contents from 1896 through the 1940s prepared by Journalism Professor, C.J. McIntosh.
