College News Bureau, 1947. The News Bureau was responsible for all news of the institution supplied to the general public through newspapers and magazines off the campus. The staff included Director John C. Burtner (left); Fred M. Shideler (right), who was also head of the Journalism Department; and undergraduate and graduate students.[OSU Archives 1947 Beaver, p. 216.]
Scope and Content Note
This extensive photographic collection consists of photographs
taken by the staff of the Oregon State College (and later Oregon State University)
News Bureau. The collection documents the full range of University programs
and activities and includes images of campus buildings and development;
student life; instruction and research; faculty, staff, and alumni; and
Extension Service programs especially for the post-World War II period through
the early 1960s.
Organization and Arrangement
The bulk of this collection is organized into 98 subject categories
(P82:1 through P82:98) such as individual campus buildings, academic departments,
activities and events (e.g. commencement), research, and faculty. Each of
these categories includes prints and negatives -- the number of which varies
significantly from one category to another. Negatives are stored separately
from prints -- but are arranged by broad category number (e.g. P82:1) and
thereunder by negative number.
Historical Note
Several individuals were affiliated with the News Bureau during
the time period represented by this collection and probably were responsible
for taking these photographs: John Burtner (until his death in 1950), Fred
Shideler, Sam Bailey, Fred Casper Zwahlen, and Gwil Evans. The collection
is named the Gwil Evans Photographic Collection because Evans probably made
arrangments for transfer of the collection to the Archives in the mid-late
1960s.
Related Materials
Many other photographs of this time period taken by News Bureau
staff are a part of the News and Communications Services (P 57) and Agricultural
Communications (P 120) Photographic Collections.
