Manuscript copy of Marching Men march by Ted Mesang. Mesang was a prolific composer; his works included several marches that were published. The Marching Men, probably composed in the late 1940s, was dedicated to the Oregon State College Marching Band. [OSU Archives - Mesang Music Manuscripts.] Ted Mesang Music Manuscripts, ca. 1948-1950Mesang, Theodore Lawrence, 1902-1967 Scope and Content NoteCollection consists of the original handwritten manuscripts of musical compositions written by Mesang. Two of the pieces, "Col. Auster" and "Holliday," include publisher's proofs from the Paul A. Schmitt Music Co. of Minneapolis, copyrighted 1948. All of the pieces except one are marches; the one exception is a trombone feature, "Skidding," called a trombone smear. All pieces are scored for concert band except "The Great Northwest," which includes only the piano/conductor part. Biographical NoteTheodore Lawrence Mesang was born Dec. 7, 1902 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He attended Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, from 1930-1940, and received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1945. Mesang received a Master of Education degree from the University of Minnesota in 1949. From 1929-1948 he was director of instrumental music in the Ashland (Wisconsin) public schools. Mesang came to Oregon State College in the fall of 1949 as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1957 and Professor in 1964. During his career at Oregon State, Mesang directed the marching and concert bands, advised the basketball pep band, and taught music education courses. He published over 250 musical compositions and was a member of ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers. Mesang died October 26, 1967 following a marching band rehearsal.
