Joseph Emery was born June 2, 1833 in Pennsylvania. Emery taught
at Corvallis College from 1867 to 1885, including mathematics,
physics, geology, and physiology. He helped to raise the funds
to purchase the original lands for the OSU campus. In the summer
of 1872, Emery served as acting president and head of the faculty,
after William A. Finley resigned in June and until B. L. Arnold
arrived in September. In 1885 Emery left Corvallis and became
