Scope and Content Note
The Story of the Oregon State College Barometer Manuscript consists of approximately 900 typewritten pages about the contents and form of the OSU student newspaper, the Barometer, from its inception in 1896 through 1947. Compiled by C.J. McIntosh beginning in 1947, it was intended as a history of Oregon State College as seen through the Barometer. The manuscript has never been published.
Historical Note
The first issue of the College Barometer was published on 16 March 1896 and was subsequently published monthly and then semi-weekly. It became the Daily Barometer in 1923 and is still published daily when classes are in session.
Journalism Professor Charles J. McIntosh came to Oregon Agricultural College in 1913 as editor of press bulletins and the College's first journalism instructor. Beginning in the early 1920s, he devoted full time to teaching, especially editing. McIntosh retired in 1941 and died in Salem, Oregon, on November 28, 1952.
