Microbiology Department moving from Agriculture Hall, 1970.

Microbiology Department moving from Agriculture Hall, 1970. The department moved to new quarters in Nash Hall designed specifically for microbiological work. 0.25 cubic foot; 8 reels (200 feet total length)

Scope and Content Note

The Microbiology Department Motion Picture Films document the department's laboratories and offices in Agriculture Hall; the construction of the Bioscience Building (Nash Hall); and the move of the department from Agriculture Hall to the new Bioscience Building in June 1970. Of particular note is color footage of a Mayflower moving van lifted by crane to the upper floor of Agriculture Hall in order to move large equipment and supplies out of the building. The films may have been made by Arthur W. Anderson, Microbiology Department professor.

Forms

The collection consists of 8 reels of 16 mm film (silent); each reel is approximately 25 feet. One reel is color; the remainder are b/w.

Historical Note

The Microbiology Department was housed in Agriculture Hall until 1970, when it moved to new laboratories and offices designed specifically for microbiological research and teaching in the Bioscience Building (later named Nash Hall). In June 1970, cranes hoisted moving vans up to the upper floors of Agriculture Hall in order to move large equipment and supplies out of the building, which had no elevator. The Bioscience Building was constructed in 1969-1970 using the lift-slab method, in which all floors were completed at ground level and raised into place.

Related Materials

The Microbiology Department Records (RG 191) include materials pertaining to the construction of the Bioscience Building (Nash Hall) and the department's move from Agriculture Hall. Photographs of the department's facilities and the move are available in the Microbiology Department Photographs (P 117) and other collections.
