Scrapbooks and Photograph Albums

Scrapbooks assembled by individuals and organizations in a variety of formats may include photographs, clippings, correspondence, and other memorabilia. Photograph albums consist exclusively of photographic images.

Although their formats often necessitate special storage considerations and they are usually stored separately from other materials, scrapbooks are usually described as part of the Institutional Records or Manuscript Collections and photograph albums as part of the Photographs Collection.

Scrapbooks or photograph albums comprise part of many different collections in the Archives holdings. Some of the most notable are the William A. Finley Scrapbook compiled by the first president of Corvallis College (now OSU); the Oliver Matthews Collection, 42 scrapbooks pertaining to Oregon trees, logging methods, and wood products; the Alumni Relations Records, which include scrapbooks pertaining to homecoming and other alumni events; and the Irwin Betzel Collection, which includes scrapbooks and a photograph album assembled by 1915 pharmacy graduate.

The Archives holdings include other scrapbooks and photograph albums that are not listed here. These include many scrapbooks pertaining to student organizations and athletics. Of particular note is a scrapbook of 1890s Oregon Agricultural College football clippings and a scrapbook pertaining to the 1961 NCAA Cross Country Champion, Dale Story.
