Association of Latin American Students Records

George Atherton Papers

The George Atherton Papers consist of student papers submitted to Atherton and reference files for research projects which include correspondence, research data, reprints and publications, and related documentation.

Atherton was a Forest Products professor from 1961 until his retirement in 1982 and was honored by the Forestry students as an outstanding teacher with the Aufderheide Award. He earned BS (1950) and MS (1966) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State. From 1950 until 1961, he was a Research Engineer with the Oregon Forest Products Laboratory. His research specialties were heat transfer and timber mechanics.

Otto Ballhorn Chemistry Laboratory Notebook

The Otto Ballhorn Chemistry Laboratory Notebook consists of reports of laboratory experiments performed by Ballhorn in the introductory chemistry course he took during his freshman year, with instructor Renton K. Brodie.

Ballhorn, from Woodland, Washington, graduated from OAC in 1915 with a BS degree in Commerce. He died in 1917.

Kate W. Belden Collection

The Kate W. Belden Collection constis of materials documenting Belden's years as an Oregon Agricultural College student and includes a scrapbook; memorabilia and clippings; publications, including two "Beaver" yearbooks (vols. 20 and 22); and photographs. Of particular note are nitrate negatives of downtown Corvallis (including the Whiteside Theater); campus; and Willamette River flooding.

Kate Weir Belden graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1928 with a BS degree in home economics. She later married Paul Julius Thiess.

James W. Callaway Papers

This accession consists of two scrapbooks and a service album for Company member autographs from Callaway's military training at Fort Lewis. Included in the scrapbooks are photographs of fellow cadets, friends and family members, dance cards for OAC dances, receipts, correspondence, postcards, newspaper clippings, materials pertaining to the OAC Wastina Club, a commencement program, brochures for the OAC Military Tournament and the Annual Junior Vaudeville show, Callaway's high school diploma, and a freshman "beanie."

Loose materials that have fallen out of the scrapbooks have been placed in envelopes and folders and identified by subject.

Ted Carlson Collection

The Ted Carlson Collection consists of materials pertaining to the "This is Oregon State" motion picture film produced in the late 1950s, a television program produced as part of the Colleges for Oregon's Future effort in the late 1960s, and radio spots about OSU aired during football games during the 1960s; photographs of Governer Tom McCall teaching a journalism class; and a sound recording of an interview with Edward C. Allworth.

Ted Carlson graduated from OSC in in 1950 with a BS in General Science. From 1952 to 1963, he served as Assistant Alumni Director and Editor of theOregon Stater. From 1963 until his retirement in 1990, he held a joint appointment with OSU's Dept. of Information and Journalism Department.

Te May Ching Papers

The Ching Papers consist of the teaching and research records created and/or assembled by Te May Tsou Ching and including correspondence; research project records; manuscripts of publications; proposals; papers reviewed; graduate teaching and advising materials; professional organization records; reference cards; and materials pertaining to women faculty at OSU, international education, and the Chinese Student Organization.

Te May Ching was a professor of seed physiology in the OSU Crop Science Department from 1956 until her retirement in 1988. She earned her BS from Central University in China in 1944 and her MS and Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1950 and 1954.

S.E. Corder Papers

The Corder Papers consist of general reference files; research project records; conference materials; and daily logs.

Stanley Eugene Corder (1925-1979) was Research Engineer with the Oregon Forest Products Laboratory from 1951 until 1961 and Associate Professor of Forest Products and Mechanical Engineer with the Forest Research Laboratory from 1961 until his death in 1979. He earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State College in 1950 and his MS from OSU in 1967. His research specialties were in strength testing and analysis of wood and the study of vibrations in occupied dwellings.

E. Wayne Courtney Papers

Delta Kappa Gamma Society International - Beta Chapter Records

The records of the Beta Chapter (Corvallis, Oregon) of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International include scrapbooks, photographs, memorabilia, membership and financial records, and annual reports. The scrapbooks include photographs; yearbooks listing officers, members, and programs for a given year; programs and brochures; and clippings about the organization and its activities and members. The records also include a scrapbook for the statewide Delta Kappa Gamma organization in Oregon (Alpha Rho) for 1951-1956.

Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a women's national honor fraternity in education founded in Austin, Texas, in 1929. The Alpha Rho (Oregon) statewide organization and the Beta Chapter, which includes members in Benton, Linn, and Lincoln Counties, were founded in 1941. Several OSU faculty have served as leaders, including Melissa Martin Dawes, Ruth Carter, and Pat Wells.

David C. England Papers

The England Papers consist of manuscripts, reports, correspondence, proceedings, publications, and photographs prepared or assembled by England for teaching and research in animal sciences, specifically swine breeding and production.

David C. England joined the Oregon State College faculty in 1955 as Assistant Professor of Animal Husbandry and Assistant Animal Husbandman with the Agricultural Experiment Station. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1961 and to Professor in 1970, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. England earned his BS degree from Washington State College (1949) and his MS (1950) and Ph.D. (1952) degrees from the University of Minnesota.

Leif Espenas Papers

The Espenas Papers consist of administrative records of the Oregon Forest Products Laboratory and the OSU Forest Research Laboratory including annual reports and advisory committee records; research project files; and reference files.

Leif Espenas (1915-1973) became a Wood Technologist at the Oregon Forest Products Laboratory in 1947 and was Head of Forest Products Research from 1959 until 1965, when he returned to full-time research until his death in 1973. His research specialities were in kiln drying and wood moisture relations. Espenas earned his BS degree in 1938 from the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University and his MS degree in 1940 from the University of California at Berkeley.

William A. "Tex" Frazier Papers

This collection documents the career and professional activities of Frazier. Included are plant breeding records; horticulture class teaching materials; American Society of Horticultural Science records; correspondence with colleagues; reference files; publications and unpublished papers; a retirement album; clippings; high school and college records; and awards, diplomas and certificates.

Frazier, a native of Texas, was Professor of Horticulture at OSU from 1949 to 1973 where he did pioneering work in developing improved varieties of bush beans and tomatoes.

Harry Freund Collection

The Harry Freund Collection consists of theses, dissertations, publications, and related research materials of Harry Freund and his graduate students at Oregon State University.

Harry Freund was a Chemistry Professor at OSU from 1947 until his retirement in 1980. He earned a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the City College of New York in 1940 and MS and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in 1941 and 1945.

Douglas W. Glennie Papers

The Glennie Papers consist of research reports, research notebooks, and reference files which include correspondence, reprints, publications, and related documentation.

Glennie was Professor of Forest Products Chemistry and head of chemical research in the Forerst Research laboratory from the late 1950s until his resignation in 1964. He earned his BS (1949) and MA (1951) degrees from the University of British Columbia and his Ph.D. (1955) from the University of Washington.

Robert D. Graham Papers

The Graham Papers consist of research project files pertaining to wood preservation that include correspondence, reports, research data, and related documentation; Graham's daily log of activities; and photographic prints and negatives of equipment and wood samples.

Graham was Forest Products professor and in charge of wood preservation studies at the Oregon Forest Products Laboratory and Forest Research laboratory from 1948 until his retirement in 1982. He earned his BS degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1941 and his MS in Forest Products from Oregon State College in 1947.

Hanson Leghorn Farm Records [addition]

This addition to the Hanson Leghorn Farm Records includes correspondence, laying contest records, ribbons and plaques, and materials pertaining to shipment of eggs and chicks. The addition also includes correspondence between Richard Hanson and his wife and family during World War II.

James A. Harper Papers [additions]

This addition to the Harper Papers consists of two series. Series 1 consists of research records from the W-7 regional project and successor projects on turkey breeding and reproduction and includes proposals, reports, correspondence, and 2 motion picture films. Series 2 consists of two sets of informational files on turkey production and includes notes, bulletins from OSU and other states' experiment stations, journal reprints, and other materials. This accession supplements the original collection received in 1993.

James A. Harper was a faculty member in the Poultry Science Department at Oregon State University from 1942-1982. He received a B.S. in 1940 from Oregon State.

Betty E. Hawthorne Collection

This collection consists of certificates and awards; speeches; clippings about Hawthorne; materials pertaining to the OSU Distinguished Service Award; photographs; a photograph album of Hawthorne's 1984 trip to Korea; a scrapbook of clippings and letters of appreciation presented to her by School of Home Economics classified staff at her retirement in 1983; and a scrapbook of supporting and congratulatory letters regarding the American Home Economics Association Foundation Distinguished Service Award.

Betty E. Hawthorne was Dean of the School of Home Economics from 1965 to 1983; she received the OSU Distinguished Service Award in 1987.

Edgar P. Hoener Papers

The Hoener Papers primarily consist of records pertaining to Hoener's work as business manager and publisher of Timbermanmagazine in the 1940s and 1950s, and include correspondence, photographs, publications, procedures manuals, information files on the lumber and publishing industries, and awards. The collection also includes materials pertaining to Oregon State University organizations to which Hoener was affiliated and to political causes and organizations to which Hoener subscribed.

Godfrey Hoerner Collection

This collection consists of two photograph albums of Hoerner's student years at Oregon Agricultural College and at the University of Minnesota; photographs and memorabilia from Hoerner's years as hops specialist with the OSC Extension Service; and photographs, memorabilia, and correspondence documenting the work of Godfrey and Ruby Hoerner in Thailand.

Godfrey Hoerner graduated from OAC in 1916 (BS) and from the University of Minnesota in 1918 (MS). He became an extension plant pathologist and hops specialist at Oregon State College in 1931 and was chief of the OSC technical assistance team at Kasetsart University in Thailand from 1955 to 1959.

Betty Hole Collection

This accession consists of color slides, 35 mm b/w negatives, photograph albums, motion picture films, publications, and other memorabilia created and/or assembled by Betty Hole.

Betty Hole attended Oregon State College in 1930-1931 as a student in home economics. She was a naval Subsistence Officer at the Pentagon from 1948 to 1973 and was responsible for installation of feeding operations on military bases and for standardization of recipes. She was an active member of the College of Home Economics Development council and the Centennial Campaign Committee. The Betty Hole Child Development Laboratory in the Family Study Center is named in her honor. She died in California on 6 August 1994.

Floyd J. ("Peck") Huntley Collection

Huntley played on the 1909, 1910, and 1914 Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) football teams.

E.R. Jackman Papers

This addition to the Jackman Papers consists of awards and plaques honoring E.R. Jackman and a sound recording. The awards and plaques include a leather plaque from the Oregon Seed Growers League (1956); the Oregon Farm Bureau Federation award for distinguished service to Oregon agriculture (1957); an award from the Southern Umatilla Soil Conservation District (1961); and a brass plaque "In Memory of Russell Jackman by E.R. Jackman Institute, June 1970." The sound recording is a reel-to-reel audiotape labeled "Archives 251 and 252" from the Archives Division of the Washington State University Library.

James W. Johnson Papers

The Johnson Papers consist of reference files and research project files which include correspondence, data sheets, reports, photographs, and related documentation.

Jim Johnson was a Forest Products researcher with the Oregon Forest Products Laboratory and the Forest Research Laboratory from 1950 until his retirement in 1982, specializing in timber mechanics and timber engineering research. He earned his BS in engineering from the University of Idaho in 1949 and his MS in forest engineering and wood utilization from Oregon State College in 1950.

Robert W. MacVicar Papers

MacVicar Papers includes Southern Illinois University yearbooks for 1969-1970; materials pertaining to Dr. MacVicar's trips to Nigeria and Chile in 1977; directories of organizations to which he belonged; and the OSU Distinguished Service Award citation presented to him in 1988.

Jean Mater Papers

The collection consists of records pertaining to Dr. Jean Mater's service on various boards and councils, including the Portland Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of san Francisco, the Oregon Consortium, the State Job Training Coordinating Council, the Governor's Employment and Training Council, the Balance of State Private Industry Council, the OSU College of Business Advisory Council, and the Community Services Consortium. Records include meeting materials (agendas, minutes, reports, handouts), committee records, clippings, newsletters, correspondence, financial and annual reports, and presentations.

Jean Mater received a Ph.D. in Forest Products Chemistry from Oregon State College in 1955. She and her husband founded Mater Machine Works and later Mater Engineering, Ltd., in Corvallis, which provides engineering and consultation services to the forest products industry. Dr. Mater has also served on the OSU College of Business Advisory Council.

Esther Mears Collection

This accession consists of materials collected by Esther Mears relating to her life as a student from elementary school to her freshman year at OSC in 1930-1931. OSC-related items include: schedules of classes, a campus map, an OSC/YWCA newsletter, a student handbook, a football schedule, receipts for quarterly membership in OSC Associated Students, and pamphlets pertaining to freshman orientation. Non-OSC items in this collection primarily consist of elementary and high school report cards.

Jimmie Morris Collection

The Jimmie Morris Collection consists of materials pertaining to KOAC radio and television and includes correspondence; certificates, memorabilia, and clippings; KOAC audience studies (1954-1955); reports, programs, and schedules; photographs; and scrapbooks (with photographs, clippings, and memorabilia).

Morris graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1928 with a BS in electrical engineering and became an OAC physics instructor and KOAC special events engineer. He served as KOAC producer-announcer (1932-1945) and radio program manager (1945-1963). When he retired in 1972, he prepared a 50th anniversary history of KOAC.

Mortar Board Scrapbooks

Harry S. Nakaue Papers

The Harry S. Nakaue Papers consist of correspondence; research proposals and data on chicken broilers and layers, turkeys and other types of poultry; lecture notes from courses taught by Nakaue; research, scientific meeting and presentation slides; photos of Nakaue; and publications.

Harry S. Nakaue began his poultry science teaching and research career at OSU in 1975 after receiving degrees from CalState Poly (BS, 1959) and Arizona (MS, 1963; PhD, 1966). He became professor emeritus in 1997.

Dale Parnell is Professor Emeritus of Education at Oregon State University and served on the faculty of OSU's School of Education from 1992 through 1996. Parnell was the first president of Lane Community College (1965-1968) and served as Oregon's Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1968 to 1974. He also served as president of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges from 1981-1991.

John C. Scharff Collection

The John C. Scharff Collection consists of awards, certificates, photographs, and letters of appreciation honoring John C. Scharff.

Alumnus and conservationist, John Scharff was a founder of the E.R. Jackman Institute (later the E.R. Jackman Foundation) and was president of its board for the first 14 years. He was Manager of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge from 1935 until his retirement in 1971. In 1971, he received Distinguished Service Awards from both OSU and the Dept. of the Interior. Scharff died June 11, 1998, in Burns, Oregon.

The Sphinx Records

This Sphinx Records consist of a constitution, initiation ritual, photographs and profiles of members, and related documentation and correspondence.

The Sphinx organization was established in 1908 to "direct student activities along lines which will promote the best interests of the student body and the Institution." Members were elected from the Junior Class and active membership did not exceed eleven. The organization became inactive in the mid-1940s.

Eleanor May and Frances Miriam Spike Scrapbooks

The Eleanor and Frances Spike Scrapbooks consist of two scrapbooks compiled by Eleanor and Frances Spike while students at Oregon Agricultural College. The scrapbooks include photographs, clippings, and memorabilia.

Sisters Eleanor and Frances Spike, from Echo, Oregon, graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1925 with degrees in home economics. Eleanor later earned an MS (1933) degree and was Associate Professor and Director of the Home Management Houses from the mid-1930s until the mid-1940s.

The Town Club Records

Paul Valenti Scrapbook

This accession consists of a scrapbook of clippings and memorabilia pertaining to the 1965-1966 Oregon State University men's basketball team, coached by Paul Valenti. The scrapbook was apparently assembled by Valenti's daughter, Vickie Valenti.

The 1965-1966 men's basketball team won the 1966 AAWU basketball championship, had a 21-7 overall record, and advanced to the NCAA West Regional finals.

This accession consists of a letter written by C.H. Warren to his friend James N. Allison describing his experience as head of the Military Department at Oregon Agricultural College and discouraging Allison from taking the post.

C.H. Warren, retired Army Captain, was appointed head of the OAC Military Department in January 1892 when John D. Letcher, who had been serving in that capacity, was appointed Acting President upon the untimely death of then College President B.L. Arnold. Warren served through the remainder of that academic year until June 1892.

Wood served as Director of the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station froom 1966 until his retirement in 1975. Previously, he was head of the Department of Agricultural Economics from 1951 until 1966. Wood earned a BS degree from the University of Oregon, an MS from Oregon State College, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He married Ramona Jackson, the daughter of E.P. Jackson, in 1935.

This accession consists of photographs (b/w prints, film negatives, and glass negatives) of nematodes and the effects of nematode diseases on a variety of plants. The images include photomicrographs and photos of drawings. Many of the images were taken and/or assembled by Harold Jensen.

The accession also includes one folder of nematology research records, specifically regarding a sampling project at Coos Bay and includes associated descriptions and drawings of nematodes.

Harold Jensen, an OSU faculty member from 1950 until his retirement in 1983, pioneered the science of nematology in the Pacific Northwest. He researched the nematode pests of alfalfa, clover, berries, cereals, nursery and ornamental plants, vegetables, and grass seed crops. He also investigated the interactions of various nematodes with other disease-causing organisms including bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
