2008 Accessions
Accession 2008:107 (Received 2008-12-22)
Newman Foundation of OSU Records (MSS) New Collection
1962-2008
5.4 cubic feet; 6 archives boxes
This accession consists of materials generated by the Newman Foundation of OSU and includes articles of incorporation, budget statements, bylaws, correspondence, flyers, a guestbook, historical outlines, meeting minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, property records, reports, a seal, and sound recordings. Primarily documenting the administration of the foundation and its management of properties near campus where the Newman Center resides, about one third of these records pertain to a lawsuit brought by the foundation against the Catholic Archdiocese of Portland regarding those properties. Interfiled among the board minutes are correspondence and other documentation relating to the lawsuit as well as proposals for the re-development and renovation (Newman Commons; Trinity Court) of the historic structures on the property. The photographs, totaling 22 prints and 25 negatives in all, depict views of the streetscape around the Newman Center buildings and the damage done to a large metal cylinder assumed to belong to the Newman Center. Made up of two cassette tapes, the sound recordings contain interviews with Gordon and Veronica Sitton about the history of the OSU Newman Center.
Incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1965, the Newman Foundation of OSU sought to "preserve, protect, and promote the Catholic faith of its members, to propagate the Catholic faith according to the dictates of the church, and to provide facilities for each purposes." More specifically, the foundation was organized to help develop a Newman Center close to the OSU campus. As a part of this mission, the foundation bought several properties on the block bounded by Monroe, 23rd, 21st, and Jackson Streets in 1966 and managed this property with the intention of maintaining the Newman Center there. During 2001and 2002, the foundation donated the properties to the Archdiocese of Portland in the interest of facilitating needed renovation work on some of the structures. The annoucement of plans a few years later to sell the properties sparked a legal battle between the foundation and the Archdiocese that the foundation ultimately lost on appeal in 2007. The foundation dissolved soon thereafter in 2008. The roots of the Newman Center itself stems from the Newman Club, which organized in 1917.

With this mission of raising money for what would become the Mom's Club Scholarship, the Club soon developed branch chapters throughout Oregon. At it's height, there were 17 branch units of the club. The Eugene/Springfield Unit was the last surviving chapter of the club, which dissolved in May 2008.
