Center for Water and Environmental Sustainability (RG 226)New Record Group
1990-2005
25 cubic feet; 25 archives boxes

This accession consists of materials generated by the Center for Water and Environmental Sustainability (CWEST) as well as associated programs Center for Analysis of Environmental Change (CAEC) and the Oregon Water Resources Research Institute (OWRRI). Documenting various administrative aspects of these programs such as strategic planning, involvement and participation in conferences, the organization of workshops, research project coordination, and the evaluation of the InterACTION Project, these records include correspondence, grant proposals, staff meeting minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, reports, research data, and survey materials. Nearly two-thirds of the records in this transfer are project files of the Technical Outreach Service for Communities-Technical Assistance to Brownfields Communities (TOSC-TAB) programs. Reflecting TOSC-TAB's involvement with various communities in providing technical assistance regarding the redevelopment of former industrialized landscapes and the cleanup of areas contaminated by hazardous substances, these files include correspondence, photographs, reports, and survey materials.

Established in 2000 through the merger of the Center for Analysis of Environmental Change (CAEC) and the Oregon Water Resources Research Institute (OWRRI), CWEST operated as a research center in support of interdisciplinary research, education, and technology transfer. In it's mission to address the three areas of sustainability, water resources, and environmental cleanup, CWEST managed OWRRI to look at water issues and the Western Region Hazardous Substance Research Center (WRHSRC) to handle cleanup concerns through the TOSC-TAB programs. Sustainability was addressed through encouraging the adaption of sustainable practices on campus and the organization and sponsorship of workshops and symposia to OSU.

In 2005, CWEST dissolved as an unit. The sustainability function of CWEST is now handled by the newly formed Institute for Natural Resources, while the management of OWRRI has now been taken over by the Institute for Water and Watersheds. Meanwhile, the College of Engineering is now responsible for the TOSC-TAB programs under WRHSHC.

Herbarium (RG 117)
1891-1997
5.2 cubic feet; 5 archives boxes and 1 12x17 oversize box

This accession consists of materials pertaining to the collection, documentation, and management of OSU Herbarium botanical specimens. The bulk of this transfer is made up of field notebooks and records generated by the various collectors of these specimens, some of whom originally worked with and collected the plants for the Herbariums at Willamette University and the University of Oregon. These notebooks and plant collection data are arranged and described in the inventory by the name of the collector/botanist. Ledgers maintained by the Herbarium that track the receipt, lending, identification, exchange, removal, and mounting of botanical specimens are also included among these records. Materials generated by the University of Oregon and Willamette University Herbariums before their closure can also be found in this transfer.

Since its establishment in the early 1880s, the Herbarium has served as the chief repository for the University's collection of flora as well as a laboratory for the study and identification of plants and fungi. Managed since 1883 by a Curator under the auspices of the Department of Botany and Horticulture, the focus of the Herbarium has shifted away from the traditional role of student instruction and more toward the acquisition and cataloging of Pacific Northwest plant specimens. As a research facility, the Herbarium has become the leading center for research on the taxonomy of mycorrhizal fungi. Currently housed at Cordley Hall, the Herbarium has moved many times from its original location in Education Hall. The Herbarium has also resided in the Strand Agricultural building, the basement of the Memorial Union, and Gill Coliseum. In 1993, under pressure to cut costs stemming from state budget reductions, the University of Oregon Herbarium merged with the facility at OSU, increasing the number of plant specimens housed at Cordley Hall by nearly one- third. Willamette University's collection of flora has also recently been transferred to the OSU Herbarium.

Matthews, Oliver, Photograph Collection (P 118)

0.60 cubic foot; 1 archives box

This accession is an addition to the Oliver Matthews Photograph Collection and consists primarily of negatives, but also includes prints and slides that altogether number a total of about 700 images. Mostly depicting trees Matthews found on travels throughout Oregon, these images also portray the Matthews' family at home and on vacation, milling operations, Oregon geological features, and images photographed from magazines and newspapers of articles and cartoons. Print copies of many of these negatives can be found in scrapbooks assembled by Matthews that have been described as a part of a manuscript collection. Notes on the envelopes housing many of the negatives suggest that Matthews prepared these images to be published as a part of a proposed, but never published, book "Roughings Out." A chronologically arranged index to the images, which were numbered by Matthews, was also included in this transfer.

Not formally educated as a botanist, Oliver Matthews pursued the study of Oregon trees as an amateur dendrologist for over 40 years with a particular interest in the largest example of a given species. He corresponded extensively with herbariums, state and national forest services, newspapers, and individuals; collected hundreds of wood specimens; discovered a new cypress that bears his name; extended the known geographical range of several trees; contributed extensive botanical specimens to many herbariums; and located, measured, and documented the largest specimens of many trees, including Douglas Fir and Weeping Spruce.

Especially interested in documenting the largest example of a given type of tree in Oregon, Matthews also describes Oregon geological features, family members, and other dendrologists in the scrapbooks. Among the types of trees described in these scrapbooks include: douglas fir, western yellow pine, spruce, ponderosa pine, willows, and alders. Numbers assigned to photographic prints in the scrapbooks correspond to negatives that can be found in the photographic collection for Oliver Matthews (P 118).
