Paul G. Risser Papers (MSS) NEW Collection

This accession consists of records generated and collected by OSU President Paul Risser documenting his involvement in various professional organizations, advisory boards, and committees as an ecology researcher and policy analyst. Among the administrative bodies represented in these records include the Ecological Society of America, Committee on Research and Peer Review in EPA, the Scientific Committee on the Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), and the Oregon State of the Environment Report Science Panel. In addition to reprints of journal articles authored by Risser, this accession includes: correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, publications, reports, and research data. The bulk of these records date during Risser's presidency of Miami University. Paul G. Risser assumed the presidency of OSU in January 1996 after serving three years as President of Miami University in Ohio. In addition to his work in university administration, Risser also taught university level botany before coming to OSU. Risser left the university in 2002 to assume the position of Chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education.

This accession consists of recorded interviews on one cassette tape with Dee Andros, Jess Lewis, and Steve Preece on various aspects of the 1967 Beavers football team, their season, and their defeat of the top-ranked USC football team. A transcript of the interviews accompanies the tape. Dee Andros was the Beaver's Football Coach for the 1967 team. Lewis was the Defensive Tackle for 1967 team, and Preece was the Quarterback. The interviewer is Kip Carlson of the Sports Information Office of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

This accession is an addition to the Robert C. Wilson Papers and consists of B&W and color photographic slides (591 in all) prepared and used by Robert Wilson in the instruction of classes in the Manufacturing Engineering Department. The slides depict examples of finished craft projects and furniture in a variety of different forms-wood, metal, plastic, and fiber. Examples of lapidary, photography, leatherwork, and wood marquetry (Wilson's specialty) projects are included among these slides. Also included are images of tree fibers used in a presentation on the identification of various types of wood. Information regarding those who created the works portrayed in these slides was not found in this accession. Four lantern slides were also found in this accession.

This accession is an addition to the Carl E. Bond Papers and consists of article reprints, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, research data and notes, reports, and student papers. Pertaining to Bond's research of freshwater fishes in Oregon, particularly sculpin, these records also contain a revised proof copy of Bond's publication "Keys To Oregon Freshwater Fishes." The photographs, which number about 180 prints and negatives, primarily depict various fishes and the results of research on them. There are also records relating to Bond's involvement in the State of Oregon Endangered Species Task Force in this accession.

This accession consists of materials generated and collected by Agricultural Engineering Professor Dean E. Booster which pertain to research into the development of a mechanized strawberry harvester. Including committee records and reports from the Pacific Northwest Regional Commission and the Oregon Strawberry Council, the records in this accession consist of article reprints, conference papers, correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, photographs, progress reports, research notes and data, and studies. Coordinated through the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station, there are Station bulletins and special reports relating to Booster's research in these records. The photographs (253 color slides; 62 BW prints, 23 color prints, 39 BW negatives) depict the testing of strawberry harvesting equipment developed by Booster "the Clipper Harvester" as well as the cultivation and industrial processing of strawberries. Dean E. Booster attended OSU, graduating in 1956 with a master's degree in agricultural engineering. A year later, Booster was appointed the position of Instructor in the Agricultural Engineering Department. In 1987 Booster became Professor Emeritus.

Robert C. Wilson Papers (MSS) NEW Collection

This accession consists of materials generated and collected by Robert Wilson which relate to his teaching career in the Manufacturing Engineering Department and includes course materials, films, newspaper clippings, photographs, and a self-published autobiography. The course materials were organized in packets by class contain sylabi, quiz blanks, tool safety guidelines, and project plans. The photographs document Manufacturing Engineering Department faculty, students, and the various labs and other facilities where classes were held. Among the photos there is also a slide presentation prepared for a summer class in marquetry which features images of Wilson's own work in marquetry. The publication, "A Glimpse into the Past", includes stories of Wilson's experiences at OSU. There are also three films in this accession. Two of the three films are newsreels on the use of the Minimalic Building Construction method to build minitiature scale models of housing structures, the while the third is a panel discussion forum with four unidentified people from an undated program "Sunday Scope." There is also a two-volume catalog of decorative wood samples for use in marquetry in two cases (Hough's American Woods).

Starting his career at OSU as a student assistant in the Industrial Engineering and Industrial Arts Department in 1946, Robert Claude Wilson began to teach in the Manufacturing Engineering Department as an Instructor in 1949. The study of wood marquetry as one of Wilson's specialities. He became Assistant Professor Emeritus in 1980. Soon after Wilson's retirement, the Manufacturing Engineering program was eliminated.

This accession consists of materials pertaining to a retirement reception sponsored by the Department of Geography for Professor J. Granville Jensen and includes a guestbook and correspondence. In addition to a copy of the letter of invitation sent by the department, there are letters from former students and colleagues in the profession as well as Oregon Governor Bob Straub. There is also a photograph of Jensen, O. H. Heitzelman, and Richard Highsmith at a retirement dinner held for Jensen in December of 1977. Starting his career at OSU in 1946, J. Granville Jensen helped to establish the Department of Geography and served as chair of the department for a number of years.

This accession consists of an Oregon State College Alumni Association Leader's Manual with handwritten annotations by Crawford Graham and a College of Home Economics Alumni Directory with an entry on Crawford's wife Jean Graham. Born in Portland, Oregon in 1914, Crawford Henderson "Scram" Graham graduated from OSU in 1935 with a degree in electrical engineering. Serving as Director of Alumni Relations at OSU from 1961 to 1978, Graham also sat on the OSU Board of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1955 to 1958. He died in 2001.

In addition, there are two scrapbooks compiled by the OSU Disabled Students Organization and Handicapped Students Unlimited . Containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondence, the scrapbooks document campus events such as Handicapped Awareness Week and athletic contests. The clippings, primarily from the Barometer and The Gazette Times, pertain to services offered to the disabled at OSU and building accessibility. The images depict group members.

This accession consists of records generated by the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences pertaining to the Pattullo Study Exchange Program and the management of the College's records in connection with the University Archives. Consisting primarily of correspondence, memoranda, and mailing lists, the materials relating to the Pattullo Program document the origins of the program as well as the interaction between OSU and other research facilities and universities involved in the exchange program. Originating in 1964 with the decision to collect and publish a volume of reprints from faculty in the School of Oceanography, the program quickly evolved into a service in which the school traded the annually published collections of faculty reprints with research publications from other universities and institutes. Also reflected in these records is the global reach of this program, with requests for publications from countries in Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. June Grace Pattullo, for whom the program is named, served as a Professor in the School of Oceanography from 1960 to 1972.

This accession consists of materials generated and collected by Home Economics County Extension Agent Janet Taylor and includes appointment calendars, brochures, correspondence, employment records, fabric samples, newspaper clippings, photographs, and an OSC bulletin on the Care of New Fabrics written by Taylor. The records pertain primarily to Taylor's work as a home demonstration agent. Also included among these records is an unidentified sewing device labeled "H.D.A. Oregon City." Janet Taylor worked as a Home Economics County Extension Agent for Clackamas County from 1943 to 1954. Specializing as a Clothing Specialist, Taylor also organized workshops in cooking and household décor as a Home Demonstration Agent.

This accession consists of records collected and generated by the Difference, Power, and Discrimination Program (DPD) and includes conference and workshop materials, correspondence, newspaper clippings, publications, and a report. In addition to the history of the program and its directors Ann Popkin and Barbara Paige, these records also pertain to DPD's program evaluation retreat, the Oregon Assembly for Black Affairs, an Oregon Women in Higher Education conference, and DPDs formation of a Faculty Development Seminar. The report is "Achieving Parity for Women at OSU." Formed in 1992 by the Faculty Senate, the Difference, Power, and Diversity (DPD) program seeks to help faculty develop coursework that address issues of diversity and discrimination. By 1994, within two years of its establishment, enough DPD courses were in place for the DPD requirement to become a part of the Baccalaureate Core for all incoming first-year students.

This accession consists of about 950 photographic images taken and collected by Entomology Professor H. H. Crowell. Consisting of B&W prints and negatives, color prints, 35mm B&W negatives, and glass plate negatives, these photographs depict insect impact upon crops and pesticide research at farm plots managed both by the university and privately. Among the insects featured in these images include: cutworms, aphids, squash bugs, cabbage maggots, onion maggots, symphylids, slugs, and ants. There are also images of Entomology Department staff engaged in research and special events such as a summer picnic. In addition to the photographs, there are 7 Super 8 films of rain beetles, termites, scarabaeidae larva, and harvestor ants filmed in the McDonald Research Forest and in a lab.

Among the topics covered in these records include: priority registration for the disabled for classes, testing services and options for the learning disabled on campus, contributions to the office, disabled student organizations and groups, grant funding from the CETA program, and wheelchair access to games in Gill Coliseum. The committee records consists of minutes and bylaws from the Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities. A program for students with disabilities was first established at OSU in 1974 soon after the passage of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, which required that colleges and universities that receive federal funding make their programs accessible to students with physical limitations. Initially managed by the Counseling Services Office, the program was administratively transferred to the Dean of Students Office in 1984. In 1995, the program became independent office as the Services for Students with Disabilities Office.

This accession consists of a final manuscript draft of a publication on the history and use of the College of Forestry's McDonald-Dunn Research Forests researched and compiled by Professor Royal Jackson. Funded by a grant from the College of Forestry, the publication includes a separate small report on the archaeological history of the forest region by Sandy Snyder. Also included in this accession are 105 sound recordings on cassette tape of oral interviews conducted by Jackson of various people involved in the environmental movement and eco-tourism in Costa Rica. Unedited transcripts for 11 of the 60 taped interviews are available as well as a list of those interviewed. The tapes are labeled with the name of the interview subject and the date. Royal G. Jackson teaches in the College of Forestry.

Both levies passed and Extension Service Districts are still in place in Lane and Wallowa Counties.

This accession consists of a booklet compiled by Mariellen and Jim Harper on the history of the Monad Dance Club. In addition to a brief historical essay and a timeline of club, the publication also contains reproduced photographs of club dances from Bob Henderson. Organized in 1922 by a group of Oregon Agricultural College faculty members who wanted a venue for afterwork socializing and dancing, the Monad Club holds dances on a regular basis at various locations both on and off campus. Though initially restricted to OSU Staff and faculty, in 1972 the club opened up membership to "town people."

This accession consists of 51 8mm and 65 16mm films shot by Agricultural and Resource Economics Dept. Professor R. Donald Langmo of the harvesting and processing of fruit, vegetables, and other agricultural products in various Oregon, Washington, and California orchards and packing plants. Most of the films are identified and dated with a few offering descriptions of the equipment used in the operations. Included among the products being harvested and processed in these films are pears, peaches, cherries, apples, blueberries, onions, peas, filberts, pistachios, and turkeys. R. Donald Langmo came to OSU in 1948 and taught in the the Agricultural and Resource Economics Department. Langmo specialized in the study of industrial engineering as applied to the harvest and processing of agricultural products.

Donald Langmo and other Agricultural and Resource Economics Dept. staff of fruit harvesting and processing. Depicting various kinds of machinery used in the harvest of apples and pears, the photographs also show fruit in stages of processing and transport. The images were primarily shot in the Wenatchee Valley in Washington State and the Duckwall Processing plant in Hood River, Oregon. Langmo is featured in one of the photos taken at the Duckwall plant.

Also included in this accession is a tape made for the "Good Morning America" TV show consisting of several takes of a rehearsed statement by a crowd in front of the MU declaring the 100th anniversary of the OSU College of Home Economics. Dated May of 1988, the videotape was provided by ABC's affiliate in Eugene, KEZI.

This accession consists of 326 photographic images (139 B&W prints; 4 color prints; 183 negatives) relating to the Sea Grant College and Marine Advisory Programs taken by OSU Extension and Experiment Station Communications staff. Depicted in these photographs are seafood processing facilities, Marine Advisory Program Extension agents involved in research and community outreach, students engaged in research, staff meetings and workshops, the OSU Marine Science Center, Sea Grant Director Bill Wick being inter-viewed on TV, and the vessels "Cayuse" and "Yaquina." There are 35 mm negatives for the images of the Marine Advisory Program that have been placed with the photographs. Some of these images are numbered on the back and several contain captions that have been taped to the edge of the photo. A number of the images taken for the Marine Advisory Program were featured in a draft copy of Sea Grant's 1970-1972 Biennial Report, a copy of which can be found in P 185.

This accession consists of correspondence received and generated by Ralph William Macy, a Biology Professor and Lepidopterist. Primarily relating to Macy's research with butterflies, the correspondence also pertains to the publication of a book on butterflies by Macy and the trading of butterflies with other collectors and researchers. Born in Oregon in 1905, Ralph William Macy taught Biology at St. Thomas College, Reed College, and Portland State College. With an avid interest in Lepidotery, the study of butterflies, Macy co-authored the book "Butterflies; a handbook of the butterflies of the United States, complete for the region north of the Potomac and Ohio rivers and east of the Dakotas" in 1941. Involved in the local Lepidopterist community, Macy regularly attended annual workshops sponsored by the Northwestern Lepidopterists' Society at Western Oregon University and Oregon State University. In 1998, Macy donated his collection of butterflies and beetles to the OSU Anthropod Museum. He died in 1998 or 1999.

This accession consists of B&W photographic portraits of past presidents of the Associated Students of OSU (ASOSU) and the Memorial Union (MU) mounted on mat board which were displayed in the Porter Council Room in the Memorial Union. With the exception of the most recent images (MU-1987/88-present; ASOSU-1989-present) all of the portraits are in groupings of three or more on a single mat. The first sets of portraits, which were cut and pasted onto the mat boards, were put together sometime in the late 1960s. Later portraits were framed year by year as they were collected and generated. Aside from two missing photographs found on one of the mats for the ASOSU Presidents (1968 and 1973, respectfully), all of the presidents are represented in these portraits and described by name and dates of office.

This accession consists of a scrapbook compiled by Katherine Smith Tegnell relating to her and husband Russell Tegnell's experiences as students at Oregon State College. Largely pertaining to their wedding, involvement in social activities, Katherine's academic achievements, and Russell's campaign for the presidency of the Memeorial Union, the materials in the scrapbook includes a blank ballot, certificates, newspaper clippings, photographs, and pamphlets. Married in 1934, Katherine Smith and Russell Tegnell met as students at Oregon State College. Social active, both were involved in OSC's Greek life (Katherine in Alpha Delta Pi; and Russell in Alpha Delta Sigma). Russell was also involved in politics on campus, including stints as Chairman of the Homecoming Committee and President of the Memorial Union from 1935 to 1936. Both graduating in 1936, Katherine earned a degree from the College of Home Economics while Russell got a degree in Engineering.

This accession is an addition to the Maud Wilson Papers and consists of materials generated and collected by Home Economics Professor Maud Wilson. A bibliographic system of index cards with entries on books, articles, and statistical information organized by subject constitutes the bulk of these records. Also included in this accession are reference materials used in the instruction of Household Administration courses 435 (House Planning in Relation to Function) and 445 (Management Problems in Home-Community Relations) which consist largely of publications, articles, and draft manuscripts. Some of these reference materials include research published by Wilson. There are also photographs (70 B&W prints) taken by Wilson of an interior of a home intended to demonstrate concepts in the efficient storage of kitchen wares, food, and other household items. The students and house portrayed in these images are undescribed. Maud Wilson came to OSU in 1925 to teach in the College of Home Economics and was the first faculty member here to do reseach full-time in home economics. Specializing in the study of housing design, Wilson also served as head of Home Economics for for the Agricultural Experiment Station. She retired in 1950.

This accession consists of 15 B&W mounted prints collected by alumnus William L. Pate of group shots of students and various campus views. The images are all unidentified except for a composite group portrait of the class of 1901 in which Pate and other classmates are identified on the back of the photo. Pate is featured in a number of the other images along with shots of Benton Hall, the greenhouse, and cadets in formation. In addition to the photos, Pate's diploma is included in this accession as well as a felt Oregon Agricultural College pennant. William Pate graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1901 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering and played on the football team.

This accession consists of materials generated by the InterACTION Project and includes annual reports, correspondence, flyers, meeting minutes and agendas, newspaper clippings, photographs, survey materials, and wall diagrams and flow charts. The records document the management of the InterACTION Project and its organization of workshops and conferences designed to train and promote skills in communcation and teambuilding among food service providers, various communities within Oregon, and OSU departments. Established through a W. K. Kellogg Foundation grant in 1994, the InterACTION Project was one of 14 programs nationwide that make up the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Food Systems Professions Education (FSPE) Initiative. With its objective described as being to help OSU "become a more responsive institution and to prepare the university to be an effective contributor to the world's food system in the 21st century", the InterACTION Project organized workshops and conferences oriented toward promoting conversational skills and teambuilding within institutions. Phase I of the InterACTION! project was primarily involved in a visioning and learning process with small, diverse groups from communities within Oregon. Phase II was primarily involved in cultural change within the institution by delivering workshops in Conversational Skills, meeting design, and team building. This University-wide project was administered through the College of Agricultural Sciences. It will end its eight-year funding cycle in September 2002 and cease operation June 2002.

This accession consists of materials relating to Harding Elementary School that were collected and generated by the Harding School PTA and which include an account ledger, brochures, correspondence, flyers, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, photographs, plaques, scrapbooks, and a student constructed time capsule from 1998. The minutes and correspondence were generated by the Harding School PTA. The photographs are primarily portraits of student classes and include imagery of students engaged in classroom activities and special events like the Halloween "Pixie Parade". Also featured in these images are shots of Harding School teachers and other staff members. Located at 510 NW 31st Street, Harding Elementary School opened to classes in 1924. Originally known as College Hill School, Harding at it's peak in 1953 enrolled 620 students and employed 20 teachers. Due to decreasing enrollment in recent years, the school is slated to close at the end of the 2001/2002 academic year. Requests for duplication of more recent photographs in this collection is subject to review by the Reference Archivist.

This report forms the first part of three narrative research notebooks compiled by Martin on his symphylid research. Together, the three reports cover the years 1939 to 1942. Of additional interest in the field trip photos are images of the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam.

Three of the images depicts Akers with the OAC Cadet Band and another shows him with the members of the Arcadia Club. Joshua Robert Akers studied Agriculture at OAC and graduated in 1918. He played French Horn for the OAC Cadet Band. A photograph donated by Murray Akers of the OAC Cadet Band that was described in an earlier accession (2002:036) will be now described as a part of P 244.

Coming to OSU in 1951 to teach in the Geology Department as an Instructor, William Taubeneck was promoted to Professor in 1965. He became Professor Emeritus in 1983.

This accession consists of a dry-mounted B&W photographic image of OSU Alumnus Mercedes Bates that was prepared for a wall exhibit. The image is accompanied by an exhibit caption with biographical details on Bates' life. Born in Portland, Oregon in 1915, Bates attended OSC and graduated with a degree in Food and Nutrition from the College of Home Economics in 1936. After working as a magazine food editor and advertising food consultant, Bates became the director of Betty Crocker Kitchens for the General Mills Corporation in 1964. In 1966, Bates ascended to the level of Vice Presidency of General Mills, a post she held until 1984. Awarding Bates with Distinguished Service and Alumni Awards, OSU dedicated Bates Hall in her honor in 1992. Bates died in 1997.

This accession consists of reports compiled by Entomology Professor Hugh Morrison pertaining to his research on symphylid control. In addition to narrative reports, there is also documentation between Morrison, other researchers, chemical companies, and the U. S. Department of Agriculture on the methods and results employed in his research. Included among the materials in these reports are brochures, correspondence, conference papers, newspaper clippings, research data, photographs, and a film script. Receiving a MS in Entomology from Ohio State University in 1936, Hugh Morrison came to Oregon State the following year to work as an Assistant Entomologist. Engaged in both teaching as well as research for the Agricultural Experiment Station, Martin worked for OSU until his death in 1967.

This accession is an addition to the David C. Pertaining primarily to the publication of England's research in swine production and breeding, the materials include proceedings from animal nutrition and swine research conferences as well as reports from annual Swine and Livestock meetings at OSU and other universities. The photographs also document swine research at OSU and elsewhere and consists of color and B&W slides. Born in 1922 in Missouri, David C. England came to OSU in 1955 to serve as an Assistant Professor of Animal Science. Specializing in the study of swine production and breeding, England became Professor Emeritus in 1990. Born in Thornton, Idaho in 1930, Dale Moss came to OSU in 1977 to fill the post of Crop Science Department Head. He became Professor Emeritus in 1995.

The numbers on the chart correspond to different color coded properties on the map. Organized chronologically by order of purchase, the chart includes the following information: from whom the property was purchased, the date of purchase, the acreage of the property, the portion in and outside the city limits, the price paid for the property, and the estimated value of the land in 1932. In addition to this chart, G. V. Skelton also designed the map for which this chart was created with the help of data compiled in 1931 by Professor Al Peck.

The Zeta Chapter was established at Oregon Agricultural College in 1921 and continues to be an active chapter.

This accession consists of research data, photographs, and reports generated by the Fisheries and Wildlife Service of the U. S. Department of the Interior in the course of a survey of the Columbia River and its tributaries. Primarily documenting factors affecting salmon spawning in creeks and rivers such as pool grade, bottom composition, and artificial obstructions, the research data consists of handwritten notes and narrative descriptions in files and on 5x8 index cards. The photographs consist of B&W prints and negatives of the creeks and rivers featured in the survey and are stored in a card file box and a file drawer. There are also two scrapbooks of photographs with images of the rivers and creeks featured in the survey, the researchers who worked on the study, and salmon management efforts at dams and hatcheries in the region. The reports, published in seven parts from 1948 to 1950, summarize the data gathered in the survey. Began in 1934, this survey was conducted by the Fish and Wildlife Service to collect information for the development of a program for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the fisheries of the Columbia River. One of the major purposes of the survey was to study the condition of the various tributaries of the Columbia to determine their carrying capacity for migratory fishes. The study was divided up into seven geographic regions encompassing the extent of the Columbia River watershed in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In 1948, the survey was concluded with the publication of the first of a series of seven reports summarizing the data collected for the study.

J. Granville Jensen Papers (MSS)

This accession is an addition to the J. Granville Jensen Papers and consists of photographs taken by Jensen and used in presentations on geography. Depicting various cities, geological landscapes, cultural monuments, and settlements throughout the world, the photos primarily focus upon North and South America but also includes imagery of Japan and Europe. There are also images of wall maps, charts, and other instructional aides for the teaching of geography. Also included in this accession is Jensen's doctoral hood and several wall plaques and certificates awarded to Jensen by Western Washington University and the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. Born in Portland, Oregon in 1911, J. Granville Jensen joined the Geography Dept. in 1946 as Associate Professor and served as the Chairman of the Dept. from 1946 to 1964. Having received his Ph.D in Geography from Clark University, Granville studied and taught Latin American geography and natural resource development. In 1977, Granville became Professor Emeritus.

There are also images of the Fiesta Bowl vicory parade in Corvallis for the OSU football team in 2001.

This accession consists of a scrapbook assembled by alumnus Donald Snyder relating to his social and academic life at Oregon State College. Included in the scrapbook are greeting cards, ticket stubs, decals, dance cards, Associated Students membership cards, grade reports, a driver's license, event programs, photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, watercolor drawings, elementary and high school diplomas, and a graduation commencement program. There are also materials in the scrapbook pertaining to Snyder's marriage to Martha De Ganna. Entering Oregon State College in 1934, Donald Snyder studied engineering and was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. Snyder graduated with a BS in 1938.

Bill Tomsheck Scrapbook (MSS) NEW Collection

This accession consists of a scrapbook assembled by alumnus Bill Tomsheck of materials relating to his experience at Oregon State College. Primarily pertaining to his participation in the legendary 1933 football team, the scrapbook includes correspondence, game programs and schedules, greeting cards, a medal, newspaper clippings, and photographs. There are records which also document Tomsheck's involvement in the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, including photos of the house at OSC. Born in Harvey, Illinois, Bill Tomsheck came to Oregon State College in 1931 to study in the College of Agricultural Sciences. Attracted by the promise of a athletic scholarship to defray tuition and other costs, Tomsheck joined the football team as a starter in his sophomore year. Staying on the team for his third year at OSC, Tomsheck played left guard as part of a legendary line-up of players known as the "Ironmen." The 1933 "Ironmen" team was 6-2-2, including a victory over eastern power Fordham and a 0-0 tie with defending Pacific Coast champion, University of Southern California (USC). The team played the entire USC game without a substitution which ended USC's 26-game winning streak. After graduating in 1935, Tomsheck worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and resided in Portland, Washington D.C., and Salt Lake City before returning to Corvallis in the late 1960's after retirement. Currently, Tomsheck is the last surviving member of the 1933 Ironmen team. Accession processed as a manuscript collection

Richard Y. Morita Papers (MSS) NEW Collection

This accession consists of materials generated and collected by Microbiology Professor Richard Morita and includes article and chapter drafts, correspondence, grant related records, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Primarily relating to the publication and patent of his research, these records also document Morita's correspondence with other Microbiologists, including mentor Claude ZoBell. Materials relating to Morita's involvement in several oceanic research expeditions can also be found in this accession. Born in 1923, Richard Morita began his career at OSU in 1962 as an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Oceanography. Specializing in the study of microbial life forms in oceanic environments, Morita participated in several deep-sea research expeditions early in his career. In 1964, Morita achieved the post of Professor. Morita retired from OSU with Emeritus status in 1989.

This accession consists of materials generated and collected by Marvin Shearer and includes articles, Extension bulletins and circulars, committee records, conference papers, conference proceedings, magazines, newspaper clippings, photographs, speechs, and technical reports. The records primarily pertain to Shearer's research in irrigation technology and use as well as his involvement in the professional community. The photographs also pertain to various aspects of irrigation, with images of sprinkler systems, reservoirs and dams in Oregon, equipment demonstrations, and professional conferences. Other materials in this accession relate to studies in the hydrology of Oregon and include a series of reports on Oregon's long-range water requirements, a soil survey of Umatilla County, and materials from the Willamette Basin Project Committee. Born in Wedderburn, Oregon in 1920, Marvin Shearer received a BS from the Oregon State College School of Agriculture in 1948. Two years later in 1950 he began to work as an Irrigation Specialist for the OSU Extension Service teaching and assisting in the design of sprinkler equipment and systems. Shearer also worked as a consultant for irrigation projects in the U.S. and abroad. In 1982, Shearer became Professor Emeritus.
