Accession 2001:125 (Received 2001-12-27) Gifford Photographic Collection (P 218)1944 This accession consists of a copy of the Oregon State Employees Association publication "The Oregon State Employee" for August/September 1944. The cover of this publication features an image taken by Ralph Gifford of a farm with mountains in the background (Wallowa Mts.?). Accession 2001:124 (Received 2001-12-19) Charles W. Cormack Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1954-1990 This accession consists of records generated and collected by Anthropology Professor Charles Cormack and includes blank course exams, correspondence, a desk calendar, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, research and lecture notes, studies, and sound recordings. The records primarily pertain to Cormack's research and teaching post at OSU. Research notes from a project at the University of Arizona on land and water rights among Native Americans in Arizona (the Blackwater Project) can also be found in these records. Also included in this accession are sound recordings of oral interviews with members of the Coquille-Siletz Indian tribe and other Native Americans in the region and records relating to the Liberty Lake (Wash. State) Rehabilitation Project. Although it is unclear whether Cormack was involved in these projects, these materials were found with his records. Charles W. Cormack began his career at OSU in 1963 as an Assistant Professor in the Sociology/Anthropology Department. In addition to his specialty of cultural anthropology, Cormack researched gerontological trends in Oregon while at OSU. Cormack became Professor Emeritus in 1979. Davis, Wilbur Arthur (MC)1976-1979 This accession consists of two curriculm vita and a letter pertaining to the academic career and research endeavors of Anthropology Professor Wilbur Arthur Davis. Born in Estacada, Oregon in 1915, Wilbur Davis came to OSU in 1966, specializing in the study and instruction of cultural anthropology and archaeology. Davis became Professor Emeritus in 1977. Among the topics addressed in these records include: the Commission's salary parity study for women at OSU, Basketball Coach Aki Hill's lawsuit against OSU, and policies regarding sexual assault and other campus safety issues. MacVicar Papers (MSS)1980 This accession consists of a honorary doctor of science degree conferred upon President Robert MacVicar by Dankook University in Seoul, Korea. In addition to the degree and its case, there is also a copy of MacVicar's commencement address to the University's graduating class. Accession 2001:118 (Received 2001-12-06) John H. Gallagher Sr. Collection (MSS)1948-1964 This accession is an addition to the John H. Gallagher Sr. Collection and consists of 75 B&W prints of aerial views of the 1964 flood in Corvallis, the Corvallis Sand and Gravel facilties in South Corvallis, an unidentified snowy mountain top (possibly Mary's Peak), and the Corvallis Airport. Born in 1875, John Hubert Gallagher, Sr. entered Oregon Agricultural College in 1895 and graduated in engineering 5 years later. Gallagher was the first secretary of the Alumni Association; served on the Board of Directors for many years; and was founder and executive secretary of the Golden Jubilee Association. He was active in the business and civic life of Corvallis; organized and managed the Corvallis Sand and Gravel Company; and was a consulting engineer for many Portland buildings and the Bonneville Dam. Accession 2001:115 (Received 2001-11-27) Donald David Hill Letters (MSS)1927-1936 This accession consists of two graduate diplomas conferred to Crop Science Professor Donald David Hill. One is a Master's of Science degree from Kansas State Agricultural College dated 1927 and the other is a Doctorate from Cornell University dated 1936. Harriet's Photograph Collection1941 This accession consists of 1 20x30 B&W print of George Hyslop enlarged from an image used in a four-page flyer on the contributions of Hyslop as a Professor of Agronomy that was published by the George R. Hyslop Agricultural Research Memorial Committee in 1943. The photo is filed under Hyslop, George (#1439) in Harriet's Collection. The original print from which this was enlarged is also in #1439. George Hyslop came to OSU in 1908 to serve as an Instructor of Agronomy for the College of Agricultural Sciences. His research focused upon seed production and certification. Hyslop died in 1943. Accession 2001:114 (Received 2001-11-16) Memorial Union Records (RG 99)1971-1996 This accession consists of materials generated and collected by the OSU Women's Center. Consisting primarily of conference papers, newsletters, publications, reports, and student papers, most of the items in this accession appear to have been assembled as a part of a library of reference and research materials. Also included in these records are subject files which contain correspondence, memoranda, and newspaper clippings pertaining to a number of topics, among them: the Equal Rights Amendment, rape and campus safety, the Miss OSU Pageant, and the Hate Crimes Commission. The OSU Women's Center began in 1972 as a study group of OSU faculty led by Economics Professor Jeanne Dost. This group, in preparing to teach a course on contemporary women's issues, wanted to also create a place on campus for the open study and discussion of feminist issues by students and outside speakers. Offering a number of services to both men and women such as counseling, support groups, tutoring and developmental programs, the Center began to receive university funding in 1974 and is currently administered by Memorial Union Student Activities. Accession 2001:113 (Received 2001-11-16) Library Records (RG 9)1945-1968 This accession consists of four scrapbooks compiled and maintained by the Library Public Relations Committee. Covering the years 1945 to 1965, the scrapbooks primarily contain newspaper clippings from the Daily Barometer, Corvallis Gazette-Times, OSU Staff Newsletter, and the Oregon Statesman-Journal. The articles relate to library staff and the construction of the Kerr Library building. There are also circular letters, Friends of the Library brochures, and photographs in the scrapbooks as well. In addition to the scrapbooks, there is also paperwork relating to the use of the Library building as a fallout shelter in the event of a nuclear attack. Apiary Rural Telephone Cooperative Records (MSS) NEW Collection1922-1962 This accession consists of materials generated by the Apiary Rural Telephone Cooperative and includes the articles of co-partnership, agreements, correspondence, financial records, ledger books, meeting minutes, and tax records. The records document the management of the Cooperative, covering such topics as: requests for membership, maintenance of equipment and lines, and taxation. The ledgers contain account information and meeting minutes. Based in the town of Rainier, Oregon, the Apiary Rural Telephone Cooperative was formed in 1922. With the company changing their connections to Pacific Bell in 1955, the balance of the dissolved cooperative was transferred to the Fern Hill Grange in 1962. These records are part of a larger accession of materials that were transferred to the Archives from Special Collections in the OSU Library. In addition to copies of a 75th Anniversary book and B&W prints of group shots of the 2000/01 membership, there are also correspondence, minutes, newspaper clippings, and table tents in this accession. Also included is a paper weight with the Triad Club logo and a key which were both produced to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the club in 1975/76. Accession 2001:108 (Received 2001-11-05) Fisheries and Wildlife Dept. Films and Videotapes (P 243) NEW Collection2001 This accession consists of two videotaped copies (1 in VHS format and the other on digital videocassette) of a video produced for the OSU-Distance and Continuing Education website. The video, which runs 1 minute 27 seconds, seeks to promote the Fisheries and Wildlife Department's 340 course "Multicultural Perspectives in Natural Resources". Accession 2001:107 (Received 2001-11-02) Entomology Department Records (RG 27)1958-1997 This accession consists of records generated by the Entomology Department and includes article reprints, correspondence, insect collection and study logs, reports and publications, and research data. The research data constitutes a little over half of the materials in this accession and primarily pertains to a study of the Alvord Desert. The report produced by this data, "An Ecological Study of the Alvord Basin Sand Dunes," is also included in these records. The correspondence relates to entomology researcher William Nelson. Herman A. Scullen Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1930-1972 This accession consists of records generated by Entomologist Herman Scullen and includes article reprints, correspondence, publications, and research notes and data. The records primarily pertain to Scullen's research on wasps with about half of the accession consisting of correspondence with Entomologists and other researchers in Latin America, Europe, and Africa. Born in Wisconsin in 1887, Herman A. Scullen came to OSU in 1920 to serve as an Instructor in Beekeeping for the Entomology Department. By 1935, Scullen earned a doctorate in Entomology from Iowa State University while continuing to teach at OSU. Renown as a world authority on the wasp genus "Cercerini", Scullen collected specimens on field trips through Mexico, Central America, and Europe. Remaining active in the field after attaining his emeritus status in 1953, Scullen died in 1981. Shelf Locations: 10/4/4/50

Paul Ritcher Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1937-1972 This accession consists of records generated by Entomologist Paul Ritcher and includes article reprints, conference papers, photographs, and research notes. Born in 1910 in Illinois, Ritcher began teaching at OSU as a Professor in the Entomology Dept. in 1952. That same year, Ritcher was also appointed Chairman of the Dept., a post he would serve until 1971. Specializing in research on White Grubs, Ritcher became Professor Emeritus in 1975. Paul W. Oman Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1930-1983 This accession consists of materials generated and collected by Entomologist Paul W. Oman and includes article reprints, correspondence, newsletters, publications, and research reference files of articles mostly from general science periodicals. The correspondence primarily relates to Oman's research, identification and transfer of specimens stored at OSU and elsewhere, and Oman's involvement in professional organizations. Born in Kansas in 1908, Paul Oman received a Ph.d from George Washington University in 1941. Specializing in the study of insects as vectors of plant diseases, Oman worked for the U.S.D.A. Entomology Research Division before coming to OSU in 1967 to work as a Professor for the Entomology Dept. In 1973, Oman was appointed Chairman of the Department and two years later, he became Professor Emeritus. Shelf Location: 10/4/4/50-60
James McIver Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1980-1984 This accession consists of research data and notes generated by James McIver as a Ph.d student at OSU. Born in 1953, James McIver studied for his Ph.D in Insect Ecology at OSU from 1980 to 1983. In 1986, three years after receiving his Ph.D, McIver became an Instructor in the Department of Entomology. Merton Lane Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1893-1965 This accession consists of materials generated and collected by USDA Entomologist Merton Lane and includes article reprints and drafts, correspondence, reports, publications, historical notes, and photographs. Most of these records pertain to wireworm and pest control research. Merton Lane worked as an Entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the Walla Walla field office in Washington. Heading the USDA's Pacific Northwest Wireworm Project, Lane worked with OSU Entomologist Louis Gentner in the identification of insects. Shelf Location: 10/4/5/10

Accession 2001:105 (Received 2001-10-26) Office of University Publications Photographs (P 94)1952-1996 This accession consists of about 3200 photographic images taken by University Publications staff for use in catalogs, brochures, and other publications. Organized by general subjects such as sports, student life, buildings and academics, the images primarily depict students and faculty engaged in various activities on campus. Many of the photos are undated and unidentified. In addition to B&W prints and negatives, there are also color slides and contact sheets in this accession. Accession 2001:104 (Received 2001-10-24) President's Office Records (RG 13)1936 This accession consists of a report sent from President Peavy to the Oregon State System of Higher Education (OSSHE) with information on the use of classrooms on campus. The report consists of completed "report of classroom use" forms which detail weekly usage broken down by days and hours. In addition to documenting the particular classes held in the rooms, the forms also note details such as the equipment available in the room (chalkboards, lantern slide projectors, etc.) and uses of the room other than instruction. The forms in the report are organized in alphabetical order by building and then numerically by room number. Accession processed and incorporated into the record group. Accession 2001:103 (Received 2001-10-19) Phi Kappa Phi-OSU Chapter Records (MSS)1983-1992 This accession consists of materials generated by the OSU Chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society and includes bylaws, correspondence, a handbook, newspaper clippings, award ceremony programs, and speech transcripts. The records primarily pertain to the nomination of students for membership and the organization of the annual ceremonies for potential candidates for membership. Other topics addressed in these records include: the annual Biology Colloquium presentation, the 1992 national triennial convention, and chapter bylaw revisions. Accession 2001:102 (Received 2001-10-11) Harriet's Photograph Collectionca. 1895-1900 This accession consists of two B&W prints of an athletic field on lower campus with the Benton County Courthouse visible in the background. Both of the images appear to be taken from the same spot on the top of a building near the Gymnastics Building. English, Department of. (MC)1955-1959 This accession consists of student class notes for two English courses taught in 1955 and 1959. For one of the courses, English 104 Introduction to Fiction, the sylabus and weekly lecture guides have been retained. Athletic Memorabilia (MC)1928-1957 This accession consists of a publication and a ticket order form donated by the Benton County Historical Society. The publication is a football rule book published by the Associated Oil Company and features information on the Pacific Coast Conference league, including the coaches of the 10 teams and the 1928 football season schedule. The order form pertains to the 1957 Western Regional National Collegiate Basketball Championships held at Gill Coliseum. Shelf Location: MC-shelves
Accession 2001:101 (Received 2001-10-10) Western Oregon Petroleum Exploration Well Records (MSS) NEW Collection1927-1996 This accession consists of records on well research generated as a result of petroleum exploration in the Willamette Valley. Collected for the purpose of identifying geological formations in and around wells, the records include: electric and density logs, well histories, geologic maps, synthetic seismograms, and lithology (mud) logs. These records were collected by Robert Yeats as a part of a research project funded by the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. The findings from this research produced the U. S. Geological Survey Professional Paper "Tectonics of the Willamette Valley, Oregon." Also resulting from this research were MS theses for the co-authors of the paper: P. A. Crenna, C. Goldfinger, E. P. Graven, T. A. Popowski, and K.S. Werner. Shelf Locations: 10/4/9/11-21

Austin, Ken (MC)2001 This accession consists of a copy of On-Dec, the newsletter for A-Dec, Inc. The newsletter is a special edition devoted to Ken and Joan Austin, who founded A-Dec. Graduating from OSU with a degree in engineering, Ken Austin founded the dental equipment manufacturing firm of A-Dec in 1964 in Newberg, Oregon. His support of OSU and of the Family Business Program in particular earned Austin the E.B Lemon Distinguished Alumni Award and the naming of the Family Business Program in his honor. Accession 2001:099 (Received 2001-10-05) Harriet's Photographic Collection1919 This accession consists of an 8 x 25 B&W panoramic print of a group shot of the Waldo Hall Club in front of Waldo Hall. This image appeared in the 1920 Beaver Yearbook. Waldo Hall served as a women's dormitory when this photo was taken and its residents were basically the members of the "club". Accession 2001:092 (Received 2001-09-21) OSU Center for the Humanities Records (RG 221) NEW Record Group1977-2000 This accession consists of records collected and generated by the OSU Center for the Humanities and includes annual reports, brochures and flyers, correspondence, course catalogs, grant proposals, minutes, newsletters, photographs, posters, and completed fellowship applications. In addition to documenting the administrative management of the Center, including the sponsorship of events and programs, these records also pertain to the Humanities Development Program, the Twentieth Century Studies Program, and the International Film Series. The Center For the Humanities was established in 1984 with help from a Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Envisioned to support indisciplinary research in the humanities, the Center offers fellowships to OSU and other university faculty to study for two and three term intervals at the Center's Autzen House at 811 Jefferson. Administered by the Research Office, the Center also supports humanities research and study through the sponsorship of conferences, seminars, lectures and film programs such as the International Film Series. Until this past year, the Center was run by English Dept. Professor Peter Copek, who passed away earlier this year. Prior to the formation of the Center, Copek co-founded and managed the Humanities Development Program, which was established in 1975. Under the Humanities Development Program, three interdisciplinary certificate programs were created (among them the Marine and Maritime Studies and the 20th Century Studies Programs) and were later administered by the Center for the Humanities. Peter Copek Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1974-2001 This accession consists of records generated by Peter Copek and includes articles, brochures and flyers, course sylabi and exams, correspondence, magazines, newspaper clippings, photographs, sound recordings, and videotapes. The materials primarily relate to Copek's teaching post in the English Dept. and administration of the Center for the Humanities. Records pertaining to Copek's English literature and film study classes are organized by course number and year, while notes and other materials relating to cinema research and the International Film Series are arranged by director and actor. Joining the OSU English Department in 1972 as an Assistant Professor, Peter Copek helped to found the Humanities Development Program in 1975 and wrote the NEH Grant that established the Center for the Humanities in 1984. Copek served as Director of the Humanities Development Program and later, also headed the Center when the mission and framework of the Program was absorbed by that of the newly formed Center. Accession 2001:088 (Received 2001-09-07) U.S.D.A. Northwest Cannery Survey Colection (MSS) NEW Collection1914-1915 This accession consists of records accumulated and generated in the
compilation of data for a survey of fruit canneries in Oregon and
Washington. The survey was conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
Office of Markets and Rural Organization in cooperation with Oregon
Agricultural College (now OSU). Included in these records are accounting
notes, correspondence, financial records, photographs, historical notes
and essays, blank forms used in timekeeping and production, and can
labels. Roughly half of the information in these records is in the form of
"outlines" supplied by the canneries or by regional fruit grower
associations. The survey contains cannery information from the following
cities and towns: Albany, Brownsville, Cottage Grove, Corvallis, Creswell,
Eugene, Forest Grove, Junction City, Newberg, Springbrook, Woodburn, and
Puyallup/Sumner in Washington State. The final report generated by
this survey was not found in this accession.
Homer Maris Collection (MSS)1919-ca.1925 This accession is an addition to the Homer Maris Collection and consists of a photographic portrait of Maris, the original manuscript of the musical composition for the OSU Alma Mater "Carry Me Back", and an annotated copy of the published sheet music for the piece. Alumnus Homer Maris earned an M.S. degree in Agriculture from Oregon Agricultural College in 1918. In 1914, Maris began composing the words to a song that he felt would gather the spirit of Oregon Agricultural College, which became Carry Me Back, the College's alma mater. In 1918, Maris dedicated the piece to "Mother Kidder," the much-loved College librarian. Maris died in 1933 in a bicycle accident. Jimmie Morris Collection (MSS)1920-1960 This accession is an addition to the Jimmie Morris Collection and consists of correspondence, radio scripts, a speech for a high school commencement, and a program for the Oregon State Fair. Many of the scripts were written or adapted by Morris with a few resulting from radio script writing workshops at NYU and Columbia University. Other scripts were prepared and used for KOAC programs. Also included in this accession are materials generated from the Oregon Citizen's Committee For Educational TV. Morris graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1928 with a BS in electrical engineering and became an OAC Physics Instructor and KOAC special events engineer. Accession 2001:076 (Received 2001-08-10) J.D. Vertrees Papers (MSS)2001 This accession consists of a third and revised edition of the book, "Japanese Maples". Originally written by J.D. Vertrees, this edition of the book has been revised and expanded by Peter Gregory. Vertrees worked as an Entomologist at OSU and pursued an interest in rare and unusual maples. Maintaining a 1.5 arboretum at the Maplewood Nursery in Roseburg, Oregon, Vertrees had amassed there at one point the largest collection of Japanese Maples in the U.S. The first edition of his book, "Japanese Maples", was published in 1978. Accession 2001:072 (Received 2001-07-27) Ade Schwammel Collection (MSS)1931-1934 This accession consists of an addition to the Ade Schwammel Collection and contains newspaper clippings, photographs, a magazine article on the Beavers Football team, and an embroidered orange "O" from Schwammel's letterman's jacket. These materials pertain to Ade Schwammel's participation on the Beavers Football team from 1931 to 1933 and membership in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Ade Schwammel attended Oregon State College during 1930/31 through 1933/34 academic years and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He played on the 1931-1933 football teams and was chosen as an All-American at tackle for the 1933 season. The 1933 team ended USC's 26-game winning streak and earned the Beavers national recognition as the "Ironmen." Schwammel played professional football for the Green Bay Packers in 1934-37 and 1943-44. Accession 2001:070 (Received 2001-07-18) Ralph Berry Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1966-2001 This accession consists of materials generated by Entomology Professor Ralph Berry and contains article reprints, audiotapes, conference proceedings, correspondence, films and videotapes, grant proposals, manuscript drafts, meeting minutes, photographs, publications, research reports, and computer software. Primarily relating to Berry's research regarding insect pest management, these records also document Berry's committee work, involvement in conferences and workshops, and publication of the guide "Insects and Mites of Economics Importance to the Northwest." Born in Gering, Nebraska in 1940, Ralph Berry came to OSU in 1968 to assume the post of Assistant Professor of Entomology. Specializing in the study of the biology and management of soil arthropods and other insects on mint plants, Berry became one of the nation's foremost researchers in pest management and developed a computer software program for Integrated Pest Management for Peppermint. The photos comprise of B&W prints and negatives, color prints, and 35mm color glass slides. Depicted in the photos are various insects such as symphylids, millipedes, and potato flea beetles and evidence of their damage to fields and crops. "Mind Over Muscle" is in the form of a rough manuscript draft while "Music Fundamentals" constitutes 3 bound volumes with handwritten notes by music student Iris Gray. Petri was a faculty member of the OSU Music Department from 1924 to 1947. Transferred from the Music Department, these items originally came from Catherine Perry, a music teacher and friend of Petri. Accession 2001:062 (Received 2001-06-25) Ernst J. Dornfeld Papers (MSS) NEW Collection1958-1983 This accession consists of materials generated and collected by Professor of Zoology Ernst Dornfeld. Arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent, butterfly genus, and organization, these records pertain primarily to Dornfeld's research on butterflies, publication of the book "The Butterflies of Oregon", and association with other butterfly enthusiasts (Lepidoptenists). The materials in this accession include: correspondence, newspaper clippings, article reprints, photographs, and research and speech notes. Ernst Dornfeld began teaching at OSU in 1938 as an Instructor in the Department of Zoology. Specializing in the study of butterflies, Dornfeld also researched comparative vertebrate histology and cytochemistry, cytology of the adrenal gland, and somatic polypoidy. In addition to his post as Instructor and Professor, Dornfeld also served as Chairman of the Department of Zoology from 1950 to 1976. Dornfeld became Professor Emeritus in 1978. Coming to OSU in 1992, Dale Parnell worked as a Professor of Education before reaching emeritus status in 1996. Parnell also served as Lane Community College's first President from 1965 to 1968. Accession 2001:057 (Received 2001-06-01) College of Forestry Photographs (P 61)1957 This accession consists of approximitely 108 B&W prints and 3 negatives depicting the construction of the Oregon Forest Research Laboratory. The images include views on the ground at the construction site (both the interior and exterior of the building) and aerial shots of the site. Included among these prints are four photos of the dedication ceremony of the Laboratory and members of the Forest Research Laboratory Advisory Committee and the OSU College of Forestry. Located on 30th and Western Boulevard in Corvallis, the Oregon Forest Research Laboratory was originally constructed for use by the state of Oregon. In the 1960s, the custody and use of the building was transferred to OSU, which employed the space for research until the completion of Richardson Hall in 1999. Accession 2001:043 (Received 2001-04-04) Bell, John R. N. (MC)1864-1937 This accession consists of photocopied documents and photos relating to John R. N. Bell. The materials include: newspaper clippings, Bell's will, records pertaining to Bell's service in the Civil War, and a biographical essay by Beulah Gilkey. Born in Virginia in 1846, John Bell worked as a Presbyterian Minister in several Oregon communities before coming to Corvallis in the 1880's. Serving as the Chaplain for the local Masonic order, Bell gained local renown as a staunch supporter of the college and served as the mascot for the OAC's athletic teams for many years. Also included in this accesion are a brass wall plaque and a coaster with the OSU Centennial logo, featuring a design which Waldron developed. Waldron came to OSU in 1954 to assume the post of Administrative Assistant to the OSU Librarian. In 1962, Waldron was promoted to the position of associate Director of OSU Libraries and three years later, to the post of Director. Waldron retired in 1984. Accession 2001:023 (Received 2001-02-27) Triad Club Records (MSS)2001 This accession consists of two signs created for the Triad Club's 75th Anniversary celebration gathering at the Memorial Union in January 2001. Displayed in an exhibit case along the Memorial Union concourse, both of the signs have velcro adhesive on the back and have the club's triangular logo. The signs were produced and transferred to the Archives by the Memorial Union Catering Services. They were part of a larger display which included scanned photographic reproductions of club group shots from each decade starting with the 1920's.
