Instructions for Scanning from Microforms

Things to Know

  • Scanning is available on the reader/printer in the University Archives & Maps reference room and on two machines in the Microform Reading & Printing area.
  • Patrons must have an onid account to scan microfilm/microfiche. All OSU students, faculty, staff, and associates are eligible for an onid account.
  • There is no charge for scanning.
  • Turn the reader on before you turn the computer on.
  • Once the computer is turned on, the reader automatically sends output to the PC (and not to the printer). For more information about switching back and forth between printing and scanning, see the instructions at the bottom of this page.

There are 3 major parts to scanning:

  • Loading microform and turning on computer
  • Scanning to PDF
  • E-mailing the PDF

Preliminary Steps

  1. Load the microfilm or microfiche on the reader and locate the page(s) to be scanned. It is essential that the reader be turned on first.
  2. Turn on the computer and log in using your onid username and password.

Scanning to PDF

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat
  2. Choose: File - Create PDF - From Scanner
  3. Confirm that the device is MS 6000
  4. Click scan
  5. Get document you want to scan on the reader screen
  6. Click preview, then scan
  7. Choose "next" if you want to do another page or "done" if you are finished
  8. When you are done: choose: File - Save
  9. Type in the file name (this file is being saved on the drive for your onid account - the PC is configured so this is your only option)
  10. Close or minimize Adobe Acrobat

E-mailing the PDF

  1. Open a browser (e.g. Firefox or Internet Explorer)
  2. Log in to webmail using your onid username and password
  3. Compose a new message: make sure to include the e-mail address where you'd like to send the PDF
  4. Scroll to bottom of screen, where attach feature is displayed
  5. Browse to the file name, choose the file that includes your scan(s), and click open
  6. Attach the file to your message
  7. Send message

Switching Between Printing and Scanning

  1. From scanning to printing: Press the 2 buttons above the green START button simultaneously (on the reader)
  2. From printing to scanning: Turn reader off and back on
  3. When you have finished your session, please log out of ONID and turn off the computer
